A Different Twist to the Blog - Meet Mr. Hamza Johari

Folks, the profiling of our classmates continue and today, we are talking with Mr. Hamza Johari all the way from Tanzania. Now - what is the first impression you get when you see Mr. Hamza - some have said that he is shy, he has a cheeky boyish smile, he is sly..lols...so on and so forth. I actually told Hamza that I thought he was 'groovy' - he is someone that definitely carries his own style, confident and looked comfortable in whatever situation he is placed in. In recent days, we have seen various sides of Hamza and I am sure most of the impressions that you had on first glance are totaly irrelevant now....lols. To give you a bried background about Hamza...
He is from Tanzania, He has an LLB degree (Hons), LLM (International Laws) and is the Executive Secretary, Tanzania Civil Aviation Authority Consumer Consultative Council. You can tell that he is very patriotic about his country as most of his statements in class would begin with.....'In my Country....'
Please continue reading as Hamza relates his experiences and impressions of ASCI:
...' My flight to Hyderabad was very smooth and pleasant. Five hours from Dar es Salaam to Muscat by Oman Air then a transit of about an hour then connected to another three hours flight to Hyderabad. I like the ancient scenery of ASCI and the place riminds me of certain areas in Zanzibar, the Island in Tanzania. The first impression I got when I arrived was the high level of hospitality of the staff working here at ASCI. That was really amazing and everybody was trying to extend his or her extraordinary assistance to me and my colleague Noorani.

I like everybody in our group, and I think it is a fantanstic one. Every member is good. The food is good I dont have any problems with food on my side.I will definately recommend ASCI to other institutions and individuals in Tanzania due to the high level of proffessionalism and expertism demonstrated by our program Directors, faculties and entire ASCI staffs. I do miss my family since I have never been away for more than two weeks. But I am in contact with them everyday and I have made good friends in the group whom I enjoy their company and the days are going so fast.

My most memorable moment in ASCI is cultural day, when I performed on the stage. I have never done that before and it was my first wonderful experience. I was feeling confident and the biggest lesson I learnt on that day is that I can do anything in this world. The most important thing is to DARE.......'
Hamza has a very pleasant and humble personality - he is always caring and always finds the time to ask his colleagues - ..' How are you today...?' He is indeed a joy to know and to have around.

A Different Twist to the Blog - Meet Mr. Paula B Delaivuna

Folks - now I have much pleasure in profiling my fellow countrymen, Mr. Paula Delaivuna. In fact - when I was advsied that I was to come for this trip, I did not realise that there were two of us until much later, which was when I tried to locate him - unfortunately or maybe fortunately for him..lols, I was not able to.

Now - where does he work? Paula works for the Office of the President of Fiji. No - He is not the President of the Fiji Islands - regardless of what his name tag states - a major promotion given to him by ASCI..lols!
Now, this is one person I have never met before in my life - but at the time we met- it seemed like I had known him well before. Paul is very friendly, has a real sense of humour, has a likeable personality and has absolute confidence in himself.
I must say that having Paul as a companion for this trip has enabled a little bit more endurance for the month. Truly a great person to know and a good friend to have.

The following are Paul's responses to the questions posed:

i. How was your trip to Hyderabad?

Amazing and an exprience for me E.g Long wait at the airport. In fact - we waited for 8 hours at Hong kong and another 8 hours at Bengaluru - so it was very tiring. But the highlight of it was - people continued to stare at me especially at Bengaluru Airport - It must be my good looks....lols!! A little later, I realise that Mele and I were the only non-Indians at the Airport - hence the stares - but - the attention was overwhelming..lols.

ii. What does this place remind you of?

It reminds me of the Universities back in Fiji.
iii. What is your first impression of ASCI?
The beautiful surroundings. Very beautiful and I felt at home.

iv. How do you like your fellow class members?
They are lively and crazy participants, especially..no - better not give any names..lols

v. Any issues on the food?

It is lovely. In fact this is one of the things that I will miss - the desserts, the service. I was glad that they were able to provide non-spicy food, otherwise, I would not have survived this long - even though we had brought heaps of tuna with us....

vi. Would you recommend this place to other persons from your Country?
Yes definitely.
vii. Anything else you would like to raise?
The experinced faculty taking up our lectures - they need to be applauded.
viii. Do you miss your family?-
Yes for the first 2 days only. .(.Well well - I suppose Paul can stay for a few more weeks then...lols)
ix. What is your most memorable moment here at ASCI...?
Meeting and getting to know each other.

.........................................

ASCI will hold many dear memories for us - and I am sure for Paul as well....the place, the faculties, the lectures, the food and more importantly our fellow classmates.

A DifferentTwist to the Blog - Meet Captain Anil Sharma

Folks, this past three weeks have gone by very fast - and I am sure that already, you are all counting down the days to the end of this course. For the foreigners, most of us have been feeling homesick from the first day - but I am glad that we have an awesome group of people whom, through friendship and companionship, our stay here has been bearable thus far. Such as the likes of Captan Anil Sharma. He has a big heart filled with good words, words of wisdom and kindness. His very nature is fatherly, he has such an exuberant personality, filled to the brim with positivity and optimism - there is no room for negativity when you are around him. Such a jovial person, indeed a great person to know.
When you first look at Captain Sharma, he seems very quiet and soft, but wait 'till you see him on the croquet field giving out instructions to the players - he is far from soft..lols - in fact the true quality of a leader comes out in him as he issues clear and direct instructions - like I had mentioned in an earlier thread - who can go wrong on the field with the likes of him taking charge.

Just to give you a brief background on the bloke:
He is presently working at "SCI", Mumbai in the rank of General Manager (B & T- Technical). He joined SCI at the age of 18 as a Cadet & sailed for 21 years on various ships in different rank (10 years as Captain). He was absorbed ashore by (SCI) in 2000 & have worked in the same department, BNT (the most profit making division of the company) for the last 10 years. He is originally from Muzaffarpur (Bihar), but has settled down at Nerul (Navi Mumbai).

Is He a man in demand? Well if you are the GM for the most profit making division of the company - wouldn't you be???? So how does he manage while being away here at ASCI? His response is below...
Normally, it is very difficult to send someone from BNT operating division to atend a course for a month. Hence our Director (BNT) has to be appreciated for same. However, I keep seeing all my emails in the morning, during the breaks & also in the evening. So all ships under my charge have not suffered at all, due to my absence in the office.
Well - you have to hand it to him - keeping track of work amidst the busy and tight schedule that we have...the effort has to be applauded!
Please find below responses from Captain Sharma regarding a few questions posed regarding ASCI and the course proper:
i. How was your trip to Hyderabad?
A: Indeed very hectic. I had gone to Panama to visit one ship on 1st June'2010 & could return to Mumbai only on 6th June'2010. I had not slept continously for 6 hrs for the last 5 days, but still I chose to fly to Hyderabad on 6th June evening, as I did not want to miss out a single minute of our programme in ASCI.
ii. What does this place remind you of?
A: It reminds me of my college days, same hostel atmosphere & a great feeling of togetherness in the group.
iii. What is your first impression of ASCI?
A: Excellent. We can't think anything bad about ASCI.
ASCI is the realm of practicing managers, the policy think tank, the fountain-head of research and a leading consultancy provider that pioneered post experience management education in India, to equip corporate managers, administrators, entrepreneurs and academicians in synthesising managerial theory and practice, to respond to the ever-increasing complexity of managerial issues confronting government, industrial enterprises and non-government organisations.
iv. How do you like your fellow class members?
A:Each individual has got some speciality. I am going to have very fond memories of my 23 class-mates. Though I am lucky to have 7 class-mates from my organisation "The Shipping Corporation of India", but I am going to surely miss the other 16 class-mates.
v. Any issues on the food?
A: Not really. Minor issues were attended immediately by the catering staff of ASCI.
vi. Would you recommend this place to other persons from your area?
A: Off course. In fact I would recommend my children to attend some course (as per their requirement & capability) at ASCi in future. Every one will benefit immensely after attending some course at ASCI.
vii. Anything else you would like to raise?
A:I would only like the hostel rooms to be upgraded.
viii. Do you miss your family?
A: Not really. Presently 23 class-mates have become my family members.
ix. What is your most memorable moment here at ASCI...?
A: It is very difficult to choose one memorable moment, as there have been plenty memorable moments at ASCI. But the most memorable moment has to be the one at Ramoji city, when our group started dancing to the tune of "Om Shanti Om" while waiting for the performers of a show & the other spectators started clicking our photographs. Each one of us (including all other spectators) thoroughly enjoyed that moment.
Yes - Ramoji holds many many memories for all of us.....

I hope that you have gained at least one more bit of information regarding Captain Anil from this profile....
